Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is the largest butterfly flight aviary and exhibit in Australia. Home to over 1,500 magnificent tropical butterflies including the striking majestic green Cairns Birdwing, the sanctuary is an all-weather experience in the heart of Kuranda.
You’ll be enchanted by these elusive wonders of nature as you wander through the aviary’s boardwalks and gardens with a picturesque rainforest backdrop. Our knowledgeable guides will take you through the aviary and our breeding laboratory, detailing a butterfly’s life cycle and its behaviour.

- Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is situated at 8 Rob Veivers Drive in the heart of Kuranda Village, 40 minutes from Cairns. There is a shuttle bus to Kuranda Heritage Markets and all attractions, departing from the Skyrail & Kuranda Railway Station every 15 minutes between 10am and 3pm daily

“ A wonderful experience for the whole family! This was enjoyed by all 3 kids and adults. I would highly recommend if you are visiting Kuranda. It was peaceful and if you stand quietly the butterflies will come and land on you much to the enjoyment of the children.

The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is such a beautiful place to visit with the whole family. We had a wonderful time exploring. As you walk through the butterfly garden, you can't help but smile as the butterflies flutter all around you. Having them land on you and seeing them so close would warm even the coldest heart.

This place was surprisingly amazing, it was better than expected, the range of butterflies that they had and the colours were amazing!. Learnt so much about butterflies and how they breed. I would say very worth the visit while your spending time in Cairns.
4 years agoWhat a fantastic time we spent at the Butterfly Sanctuary!
What a fantastic time we spent at the Butterfly Sanctuary!! This place was magical. Our boys (4 and 9) were running after butterflies the whole time and absolutely loved it. So much so that they didn't want to leave and we were almost late for our trip back on the Skyrail. I will absolutely recommend it. Especially to families with kids.

We took our 3 young children to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and our overall experience was fantastic. The staff there were very friendly and informative making our day relaxing. The kids were mesmerised as well as well educated with all of the information provided throughout the sanctuary. Upon arrival you receive a stamp so that your welcome to leave, and come back later. We did just that, left the centre to go and have some lunch and then were able to take the kids back in for another walk through. Highly recommended. Very peaceful experience.
